12/21/2018  · Interesting facts about Pen y Fan. Pen y Fan, together with Corn Du, it’s secondary summit, was previously named Cadair Athur, meaning (King) Arthurs Chair. Whilst there are no stories directly linking King Arthur to Pen y Fan, legend has it that Arthur once helped the people of Brecon with a group of pesky wild boars.


Standing at 886m above sea level with a topographic prominence of 672m, Pen y Fan boasts the tallest peak in the Brecon Beacons, tipping its neighbouring mountains to this impressive landmark. Photo: Gareth Lovering Photography, The highest peak in the Brecon Beacons National Park and highest in Britain south of Snowdonia, Pen y Fan rises to a height of 886m or 2906 feet above sea level. It is formed from layer upon layer of Old Red Sandstone, a thick sequence of sandstones, mudstones and siltstones often referred to familiarly by geologists as ‘the ORS’.


Pen y Fan, the highest peak in the park, stands 2,906 feet (866 metres) above sea level. Because of its location at the edge of the Welsh highlands along what became the English border, Brecknock has been historically a centre of conflict between the Welsh….
